Art teacher at Huntingburg Elementary School receives National Honor

(Appleton, Wisconsin) - Prang, the maker of high-quality student art materials for more than 100 years, today announced the recipients of the inaugural PRANG® Art Teacher of the Year awards. 10 recipients were selected for making significant contributions in the lives of their students by advancing art education and inspiring self-expression.

Emily Meyer is the art teacher at Huntingburg (IN) Elementary School and a member of the first class of Prang Art Teachers of the Year. Emily received 28 nominations from fellow teachers, students and parents and repeatedly recognized for her dedication, creativity and incredible work ethic.

“Emily Meyer came into our art position bringing energy, knowledge, and methods/techniques not used in my 10 or so years I've taught at that school” said Matthew Wildof, a fellow teacher at Huntingburg. “Not only in her art position, but she is always ready and willing to go above and beyond to better the students and our school. She makes herself available at Open Houses and evening events at our school to showcase artwork done by our students.”

Several people who nominated Emily indicated that the art program at Huntingburg had struggled for years before Emily arrived. One parent who nominated Emily said “Huntingburg Elementary’s art department had been struggling for years. Enter Emily Meyer! Emily brings a love for art rivaled by few. Her infectious and energetic personality coupled with a firm hand (she is a US Air Force veteran) was just what HBE needed to flourish.”

Emily is a veteran, having served in the US Air Force prior to joining the staff at Huntingburg as the art teacher and her impact has been remarkable.

“The change in students love of art and their abilities since Emily took over had been incredible”, said Megan Anselment, Principal at Huntingburg Elementary School. “The students are involved in art projects all throughout the county and have shown the same love of community service that Emily instills. She had to completely revitalize the program and basically start from scratch with little funds. She is constantly redecorating the entire school with encouraging quotes painted in the bathrooms, new displays showcasing students in the lobby, and even a beautiful mural in town they got to help create.”.

Emily will receive Prang® and Dixon Ticonderoga products for their art room with a retail value of $5,000 and a handcrafted, custom plaque to commemorate being recognized. Additionally, Emily will be featured on the Prang website and social media accounts.

“We know art teachers are the unsung heroes of every school in the country,” said Steve Boyea, EVP Sales and Marketing for Dixon Ticonderoga Company, the makers of Prang. “The nominations were heartfelt and inspiring and revealed the incredible connection art teachers make with their students, colleagues, and communities.”

A highly esteemed committee selected the 10 art teachers from more than 2,000 nominations submitted. The committee included an art teacher, a working artist, industry executives and two thought leaders in art education:

  • Cassie Stephens – Blogger, Author and “America’s Art Teacher”
  • Mario R. Rossero – Executive Director of National Art Education Association
  • John Carlberg– President and CEO Dixon Ticonderoga Company , the makers of Prang
  • Jordan M Rhodes – Artist and Ph.D in Chemistry with 350K Instagram followers
  • Nolen V. Bivens – President and CEO of Americans for the Arts
  • Rita Gibson – Product Manager for Prang

“Being on the selection committee for the Prang Art Teacher of the Year awards was a great experience and I appreciated the opportunity to be a part of it”, said Nolen Bivens, President, and CEO of Americans for the Arts. “The nominations revealed the tremendous impact art teachers have on their students. Participating further strengthens my commitment to equitable advocacy for the power of the arts in education and what teachers do for students. Congratulations to all the winners and everyone who was nominated.”

Nominations were submitted to the Prang website and came from fellow teachers, administrators, parents, current and former students, and community members.

About PRANG®
Prang was founded in 1882 by Louis Prang, an American printer, lithographer, and publisher who believed that art plays a vital role in fostering imagination and independent expression — especially in children. Prang was a pioneer in advocating for art in education and published the first comprehensive training program for public school art teachers. Prang also developed non-toxic formulas for products, which led him to create a full line of high-quality, child-safe art products. Prang’s vision lives on today.
